The Confession of Sin

By Glenn Ward

All have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The one thing that God hates is sin. The one thing that separates man from God is sin (Isaiah 59:2). The one thing that will destroy man is sin. The only one that can forgive sin is God (Mark 2:7; Luke 5:21). The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is life in Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23).

If sin is so bad why do men sin? Well, there probably are many reasons that mankind can give for why he or she would sin. Man is made up of matter so he has a physical side, but God gave men a soul so he has a spiritual side. Both sides are at war with each other. The outward man wants to fulfill the lust of the flesh and the inner man wants to serve God. Man cannot serve God and Mammon (Matthew 6:24). We must, also, recognize that Satan is in the world trying to get as many as he can to follow him and not God (1 Peter 5:8). Sin can be fun but the end will be bad. One may suffer consequences of sin in this world and eternal punishment in the world to come.

God does not want man to sin but He does not force anyone to stay sinless. God has given us free will to decide what we want to do. We can serve God or Satan. However, God knew that man would sin. God had a plan before He created the world to reconcile man back to Himself. Since all men would sin there was no one who could pay for the price to redeem one from sin. God loved us so much that He was willing to give His Son as a sacrifice for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2). Jesus obeyed His Father and came down from heaven and live in the flesh. He was tempted in all points that man is tempted but He did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus was willing to offer His body as a sacrifice for the sins of the world (Hebrews 10:12). God resurrected Jesus in three days and Jesus ascended back into heaven, fifty days later, and sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus has the words to eternal life and all we need to do is obey His commands (John 6:61-69). Hearing the gospel, believing in Jesus as the Son of God, repenting of sins, confessing our belief before man, and being baptized for the remission of sins, our sins are forgiven. If we obey sincerely, Jesus will add us to the church (Acts 2:47). God promised that He would not remember them again (Hebrews 8:12). After we are baptized there is another procedure to have God forgive us from sin.

God, also, gave us a conscience to help us not sin. We need to fill our soul with the words of God and our conscience will condemn us if we sin. However, if we sin again, God is willing to forgive us over and over. His word tells how to be forgiven again. When we realize we have sinned we must repent of the sin and pray to God to forgive us (1john 1:9). One can confess their sins one to another which will humble us, but remember it is only God that can take our sins away. We will, also, have to confess before God and pray for His forgiveness. All sins are against God and must be forgiven by God to be saved. If one treats us unfairly and sins against us, we must be willing to forgive them of their sin. If we will not forgive, God will not forgive us of our sin (Mark 11:26). Confessing and praying is good for the soul and is needed to have your sins forgiven.
